Table 1 – Bog Restoration Opportunities
Restoration Category
Example Opportunity
Ecological Restoration
• Establish long-term ecological monitoring to inform
restoration planning, assess ecosystem response, measure
outcomes, and support adaptive management.
Hydrogeological Restoration
• Identify and seal breaches in the silty clay strata below the
peat layer to reduce water loss and improve bog hydrology.
Vegetation Restoration
• Actively increase populations of native, desirable plants in
areas where invasive species have been removed and in
areas of disturbance.
Wildlife Restoration
• Improve habitat suitability by removing invasive trees,
retaining open water habitats, and installing nest/roost
boxes.
Fire Management
• Develop a site-specific fire management plan in
collaboration with Richmond Fire-Rescue that incorporates
best practices for prevention, control, and post-fire recovery.
Ecological monitoring will be a vital component of future work to assess the effectiveness of
restoration activities, document successional changes, and assess ecological responses to local
conditions. Three forms of monitoring are recommended: survey-based monitoring, drone
camera monitoring, and long-term monitoring plots.
