Richmond School District No. 38 Engagement Findings
Through the engagement process for this Needs Assessment, staff also consulted with SD38 staff
regarding the potential use of school district space for musical arts and performing arts activities.
Engagement findings indicated that, while SD38 facilities include some arts-related spaces, these
spaces are intended to support school-based needs and have limited suitability and availability
for broader community arts use. In addition, school district facilities do not currently include
larger dedicated theatre or performance venues.
The engagement also identified that SD38 has its own need for affordable performance venue
space in Richmond, particularly for school concerts, festivals, and productions. Richmond Cultural
Centre spaces were identified as supporting some arts-related needs, and the consultation process
also highlighted an opportunity for continued communication with SD38 regarding City arts and
cultural opportunities and greater access to City-supported spaces. Overall, input received through
the Needs Assessment indicates that SD38 facilities are unable to provide a viable long-term
solution to Richmond’s broader music and performing arts space needs;
